Home made candle holders out of household items?

Sep 28, 2008 | making candles at home

So im settin up this date and i wanted some romantic candle lighting. the only problem is i have candles but no candle holdersand im also out of money… so i want to use household items as candle holders, but it has to look cute and creative…. NOT TACKY! got any ideas?

You can use many different things for candle holders … let your imagination run wild!! Melt some of the candle wax onto the container to "stick" the candle, and then fill the container 1-2" with a fixative such as: salt (as was mentioned previously; you can color it with food coloring if you want something prettier), sugar (can also be colored), sand, tiny rocks & pebbles, pot pourri (make sure it doesn't come close to the flame), rice (tint with foodcoloring if you want), small sea shells, dirt, or even laundry soap. (Pick out any pieces of wax and you can still use it to do laundry!)

Containers that might work include: empty glass condiment jars; glasses; coffee mugs; stacked napkin rings (glue them together for safety); canning jars; empty medicine bottles (it's a stretch, but I've seen it done); shallow or deep bowls; tiny glass bowls; plastic take-out containers (rinse well and set multiple votive or pillar candles in your chosen fixative); etc.

Think out of the box and see how creative you can get with "stuff" you have in your home. Good luck, and have fun!

You can use a clear glass plate and put a candle in the middle then decorate around it with decorative stones, fish tank stones, or anything really. Or else you could use a beer glass in the same way, filling the bottom third with sand or pretty rocks and then placing the candle on top of that. Finish it off by tying a ribbon around it toward the bottom in a bow.

Another alternative to candles is to find a large vase or any see through glass thing and put in christmas tree lights and garland or lights and anything that will act as a filler and reflect the lights through the glass! Try it, it looks really cool!

you may have thought of this…wine glasses, if they are all different…even better. Fill with salt to hold the candle. If they are different heights…even better. Old fishbowl? Same thing. use the old gravel to hold candles. Throw in some shells and you have romance.

what is your 'theme'? You can use fancy glasses as holders. if you have some of those colored rocks/stones put them in the glass around your candle to hold it upright. Fancy plates with a 'pearly' necklace laying around the base of the candle. Or a saucer. most of us have saucers that came with a dish set and we don't use them. If it is a Italian theme- you can put tapers in an empty wine bottle and let the wax drip down the sides. (put it on a plate/saucer).
