So I was thinking about starting a business and part of it would be making candles.?
Sep 29, 2008 | making candles at homeI need to know how can I start this without investing in a $1000.00 wax melter right off the bat-they say to not melt on the stove so what can I do? Also if I made candles, homemade pic frames and other home decor do you think I would do good selling these item?
Wax has a low-temperature flaming point (don't know the official term) — try using the defrost cycle on a microwave, being careful the first few tries. Another option is to use the old double-boiler method (one pot inside another, using water between them as the heat conductor, being extremely care not allow wax to come into contact with electric coil or flame of a burner. Remember, candles burn with a flame of the wax burning and you certainly don't want to burn yourself or your kitchen that way!!!! As for success, well the statistics for businesses is that only one in 5 make it past one year. If you feel very strongly, you might be one of the ones. If it is just an idea you like, I'd say you might try another idea.

Depending on which wax you go with soy or parafin
( I prefer soy:>) you can use a presto kicthen kettle for both found at walmart for about $30, it workes great, but soy you can melt in the micro, but I dont beleive you can with parafin, for more info ck out candletech.com, there message board is great for candle makers. good luck
